King Of Baking Kim Tak Goo Review

King of Baking

Tak Goo is the eldest son of Goo In Jong, the president of Samhwa Enterprise, a legend in the baking industry. Although he is an extremely talented baker and seemed destined to succeed his father as president Tak Goo’s inheritance rights were taken away due to a conspiracy planned by his father’s legitimate wife and half-siblings.  With his great determination to succeed and become the number one baker king in the baking industry, Tak Goo drives himself to rebuild his career from scratch. More hardships and pain comes along in his way as he strives harder to reach his goal when he is caught between two women. The first love who will betray him for her own interest and the other woman who will stand by him through everything despite being hurt.  Baker King also  pits two young men in a familiar rivalry: humble hero Tak-gu (Yoon) displays a natural talent for pastry-making, while his rich rival (Joo-won) has no such interest but pursues this path because he longs for his father’s attention.

Character Bio

Kim Tak Goo

Kim Tak Goo (Adult)

~Yoon Shi Yoon as Kim Tak Goo

~Oh Jae Moo as Kim Tak Goo (child)

Although he is the eldest son of Food baking industry legend SAMHWA Enterprise’s President “Goo In Jong”. He is much hated by his father’s legitimate family as he is the son of Goo In Jong’s mistress despites his talent in baking. He was eventually dethroned from his rights to succeed his father due to a conspiracy and had to start building up his career again right from the bottom, facing many difficulties and trials. No matter what hardships he faced Kim Tak Goo always smiled and enjoyed every day.

His character is such a good example of a person with great character. No matter how many times someone wrongs him he always forgives them. Kim Tak Goo has maybe the worse life I have ever seen in a drama and yet he always moves on with his life. He makes you feel happy by just watching him. The actor who plays him,

Kim Tak Goo (Child)

Kim Tak Goo (Child)

Yoon Shi Yoon did an excellent job. Such flawless acting with a very cute grin and mischievous manner he was so likeable.  Never once in the whole drama do you hate him, you want more of him in every scene. The actor makes you feel sorry for his character and makes you feel the right  emotions at the right moments in such way that throughout the drama you side with Kim Tak goo, cheering him on and getting mad at anyone that hurts him. As cheesy as it sounds, he really makes you feel this way.

The child actor who played him, Oh Jae Moo was also really good. I like the transition from child to Adult. Kim Tak Goo as a child had the same cheeky determined characteristics of his adult character and I liked how it was made so realistic in the way that you can actually imagine the child growing up to be the adult Kim Tak Goo.

~Eugene as Shin Yoo Kyung

~Jo Jung Eun as Shin Yoo Kyung (child)

 Shin Yoo Kyung

Shin Yoo Kyung

Having grown up poor and living with an alcoholic father, Yoo Kyung has always wanted a better life. She is known as an unreachable goddess to everyone around as she is both ruthless and elegant at the same time. Although Yu Kyung is in love with Tak Goo due to her ambitions, she got trapped into a loveless marriage after she threw away love in place of getting power.  Yoo Kyung is the kind of girl who will do anything to take revenge on the people that hurt her even if she hurts herself in turn. One of those beautiful girls who were once kind but due to hardships in their life, they never trust anyone and become selfish.

At first, while watching the first few episodes I thought she was a really sweet person and she would not be selfish but instead she becomes this force in the drama in such a way that you look at her not exactly with sympathy but awe due to how strong she is and how she fights her way to the top, crushing all the people who have wronged her and hurt her.

The actress who plays her Eugene usually does very sweet soft characters and I think this was a very different character for her to do. She did an amazing job, her emotions were right and also she has such a way with making emotions with her eyes. Silent but deadly. LOL.  There were moments where I disliked her but I guess the way everyone feels about a character in a show is always different. ^_^

~ Lee Young Ah as Yang Mi Sun

Yang Mi Sun

Yang Mi Sun

Yang Mi Seon is a Patissier who works along with Tak Goo after his inheritance was taken away from him as both of them are learning their baking skills from her grandfather. Although she thinks that Tak Goo as her rival at first, she falls in love with Tak Goo due to his nice personality. Being the complete opposite of Yoo Kyung, Mi Seon values her friendship, love and family above anything else and is willing to sacrifice herself for the sake of others. Although her kind virtues eventually captured the heart of Kim Tak Goo, she is also subjected to the bullying of Shin Yoo Kyung.

I adored Mi Seon! She was so cute and just utterly likable. Always smiling, kind and really like all the cakes she made through out the drama. Just wanted to go through the screen and eat them up..*_*

The actress was also really good. I dont think anyone in King of Baking did a terrible job at it. They were so good. Their emotions were so real. Ive seen the actress playing Mi seon with long hair and even though I am not that fond of short hair I think if in this role she had long hair it would not have suited her character. Shes like a cute pixie, so cute honestly.

~Joo Won as Goo Ma Joon

Shin Dong Woo as Goo Ma Joon (child)

Goo Ma Joon

Goo Ma Joon

He was supposed to be his father’s successor if his half-brother, Tak Goo didn’t appeared. He is feeling jealous of his brother’s talents and his position. Ma Joon often have the feeling of wanting to crush his brother which eventually leads him to an unfortunate end. Ma Joon is a very good looking cold hearted man.  The kind of man who will never love anyone but himself, he was kind of the female version of  Yoo Kyung but more intense especially with showing his emotions.

Through out the drama I had a hate love relationship with him. He was really a spoilt brat and annoyed the hell out of me in most the scenes. There were moments where I really liked him a lot as well especially near the ending. When he smiles..*_*  He is really handsome and tall though. I hated how he thought the world revolved around him but sometimes I felt sorry for him. In a way his family drove him to become like that. I felt sympathy at certain times and maybe near the ending of the drama I kind of liked him. He was like a tortured person, inside and outside he was just a jerk.

There were certain scenes which sometimes changed my mind especially when he and Tak Goo are together. Mostly Tak Goo being nice and Ma Joon realising what a selfish jerk he is…at moments like that I would get all excited and think they would both team up and then take over the world. Kim Tak Goo and Ma Joon were the real lovers in this drama. xD

Review

This drama was such a joy to watch. Its been a long time since I have enjoyed such a good drama. The storyline was amazing, the characters were perfect and I dont have anything negative to say about it. I was actually sad when it ended. It will take some time to get over the fact that it has ended. The storyline was very dramatic but not in the way that its unrealistic, it was the kind of story that pulls you in and makes you so get so interested into the drama that after every episode you want to know what happens next. Episode after episode was fantastic, you fall in love with some characters and you hate some. Even though its a very melodramatic drama it was not sad. There were very comedy moments. This drama has everything, romance, drama, action, comedy and tears. This was based on a true story, not completely of course just loosely.  Through out the drama you crave bread and it also made want to learn how to make bread.  When  I watched the last episode I had really bad withdrawal symptoms, I was upset knowing it was going to end but while watching the last scene I was happy because of the way it ended. Was a very realistic ending, something you dont think is going to happe. It was amazing and I personally think if you enjoy your dramas you have to put this on you must watch list. It was a joy to watch and at the end of the series you still want more. You will watch the start of this drama in anticipation and the ending of the drama will leave you happy and make you want to watch it all over again…
