SCHOOL Review

The drama revolves around a public elementary school beset with problems. Eguchi plays the passionate protagonist, who worked at construction sites for 20 years with a mid-sized general contractor. However, in order to keep a promise he made with his former teacher, he suddenly changes jobs and becomes the principal of his old school, which he must save from closing down. —Tokyograph

Review

I was expecting a combination of GTO and Gokousan with this drama but it is actually quite different from the usual School themed dramas. School has a psychological trait throughout its episodes. The situation with the children and how they deal with them is very heart-warming but they contain aspects that teach you that the way you handle young children’s and the problems involving them can end up having the opposite reaction then you could have hoped or expected.

For example in one episode a child is getting bullied by his classmates and even though Naruse Seiichiro (Headteacher played by Eguchi Yosuke) stops him from getting bullied he never realised that the bullies will just find someone else to hurt. I suppose the lesson here is Even if you have the best intention you have to think of the consequence your action could have. Nothing is ever so simple.

This drama is not amazing. It won’t blow your mind but it is a good drama and like many Japanese Dramas teaches you a lesson about things such as teacher and school relationship. The sensitivity in dealing with children and their emotions and how sometimes there is a limit to how much you can care about children that you teach. Also why children act the way they do, what can trigger behavior and how you should try your best with them.

The acting is good enough. The children are actually pretty good at their emotions and reactions. Eguchi Yosuke as Naruse Seiichiro was pretty good as the main protagonist and Nishijima Hidetoshi as Kirihara Iori was a okay. Sometimes his expressions are just too bland. Overall the acting was okay but I think the storyline is quite good so it was okay that the acting was not amazing.

I think this drama is one of those dramas that you watch when you’re looking for something serious to watch but not so serious that its boring. Its a school drama so you would like it if you like to watch shows with good teachers who care for their students. Quite a simple drama with a good moral behind it. To put it simply its entertaining enough. I do not think it is a must watch or something that you should skip because it is terrible. Its a good story for those times when you want to watch something and have nothing else.
