The Moon That Embraces the Sun Review

A “court romance” drama which is set in a royal palace during the rule of a fictional king. The story centers around 23-year-old king Lee Hwon and his first lover whom he is ready to give all his life. It is a story of innocent love among young people of a different era. Their sad but beautiful love story. Their pure royal romance shrouded in gloom. Love of different colors… The drama also talks about right-positioning. Every element should be set in its proper place. Just how it is dangerous for the solar system if the sun and the moon were to swerve off course, the whole world can be dangerous when things stray from their original path. This is the political ideology of King Lee Hwon.

Review

Though this drama is a historical drama it is not as dynamic or as complicated as many costume dramas. It is a simple romance drama containing betrayal, jealousy and political plots. It is written very well and I enjoyed it so much that I would include it in one of the dramas everyone should watch.

The setting was carefully chosen and I enjoyed how it was a very relaxed drama. It contained humour to make up for the sad parts. The starting of the drama gave an impression of a serious storyline but instead I rate it more of a “teen” drama rather than an adult mostly due to its emphasis on the romance and immature scenes that is not to say it made the drama any less likeable in fact it is great for those moments where you just want to enjoy something.

There are not as many action scenes either which is right in tune with being a teen drama so you can expect less blood scenes. I usually like my historical dramas bloody but with this drama it seemed okay as the focus was more on the romance rather then anything else. I suppose the evil doing was mostly done with words rather than swords. In this case they approached it with shamanism. Though I do think they could have handled the magic a bit more tastefully rather then it being all over the place. Sometimes it seemed a bit to unrealistic.

Now for me personally there are a lot of things that this drama could have done without. Mostly many aspects of the ending felt a bit rush. Read the spoiler to read what I feel the drama could have done differently.

Do not read the spoiler if you have not watched the drama because it will spoil it for you >.>

The young actors who came at the start did such an amazing job. I literally missed them once the adult actors came along which was after episode five.  All of them have acted in excellent dramas before such as The duo, Iljimae, Warrior Baek, The gumiho’s revenge ect. I adored Yeo Jin Goo and Kim Yoo Jung who were playing Lee Hwon and Yeon Woo/Wol. They had such chemistry and were so adorable >_< Also Lee Min Ho was  a good actor. You may remember him if you watched  Sungkyunkwan Scandal and  he was also with Yeo jin goo in Gumiho revenge.

As for the adult actors I must admit that Kim Soo Hyun who played Lee Hwon, the king, blew me away with his acting. He was so so impressive and as much as I loved Jung woo I think I fell a bit more for Kim so Hyun. xP He had such a presence and the emotions he portrayed were so good. Jung Eun Pyo as the eunuch Hyeong Seon was an excellent choice for a side character because he really brought in the fun moments. Song Jae Rim as the Kings guard played the tall, mysterious deadly character so well.  Fell in love with him >< Of course I could not complain about Jung woo but I must admit near the ending he had less screen time then I would have liked.

Personally I feel that Han Gin was really monotone and had no expression what so ever as Wol / Heo Yeon Woo. I understand that she is suppose to be silent serious character but I could not feel any emotion even when she found out things that could break a person. I feel she was not as impressive as the other characters.  Even the other female characters like Jun Mi Sun as the Head Shaman were  unremarkable. I feel in a way that was a bit of a flaw but they did not spoil the drama for me.

Overall I enjoyed this drama a lot. I looked forward to watching it each week.  The drama could have been better especially with the ending and with less unrealistic moments. It kind of reminded me of a teenage novel.   A lot of romance and passion with not a lot of depths or seriousness. Not exactly a good thing but that saying if you do watch this drama it wont disappoint you. Its a lot of fun, entertaining and a memorable drama which will most likely be on your must watch list.

Going to post a few backstage pictures here because I find them so adorable.
